On Friday night, Penn State kicked off its trip to the Midwest with a 29-10 win over No. 4 Wisconsin and finished the rounds Sunday with a similar match up and win over No. 6 Minnesota 31-10.

Key matchups over the weekend included No. 1 Seth Gross of Wisconsin versus No. 2 RBY and Badger No. 3 Evan Wick versus No. 1 Vincenzo Joseph.

RBY started with a shot right at the start which almost gave him an early lead, but Gross forced a scramble and a stalemate. Gross then took a shot, which RBY countered into a scramble and another stalemate. The Badger then connected on a low single and turned RBY for two near fall points, then RBY was able to get the reversal and shorten Gross’ lead before cutting him. The second started 5-2 Gross who chose down. RBY cut him then exploded through a high shot for a takedown, 6-4 then rode him out. RBY chose neutral to start the third. RBY had two solid shots, both times looking like he had the takedown secured, but Gross was able to fight him off and take the 6-5 win.

No. 1 Vincenzo Joseph exposed the real gap between the top two and the rest of the 165 weight class in his matchup with No. 3 Evan Wick. Joseph dominated in every offensive position. He scored early, clinched riding time while forcing a stall in the first, then he scored on a reversal after starting down in the second and forced another stall. With a 5-0 lead, Joseph chose neutral to start the third, notched a final takedown and shutout Wick 8-0 for a major decision win.

Other highlights of the weekend were No. 2 Nick Lee’s tech fall win over No. 7 Tristan Moran of Wisconsin, and he pinned No. 4 Mitch McKee of the Gophers. Jarod Verkleeran came oh-so-close to an upset of No. 6 Brayton Lee of Minnesota but fell 7-5 in sudden victory. No. 2 Mark Hall also had a pin and a tech fall.

It’s about to go down this Saturday when the Buckeyes and 16,000 fans pile into the BJC for the annual much-anticipated matchup between the No. 2 Nittany Lions and No. 3 Ohio State. The Buckeyes bring six ranked wrestlers to the stage and are coming off a win over Northwestern. Tune in to BTN at 7:30pm EST to catch the action live.
