THON total 2018

Last weekend, 707 dancers stood for 46 hours in the fight against pediatric cancer. THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, was held at the Bryce Jordan Center on Penn State’s campus from February, February 16 to Sunday, February 18.

Over the course of the weekend, more than 16,000 volunteers participated in THON events. Thousands of individuals cheered the 707 dancers on from across the globe, with people streaming the event from all 50 states, and more than 90 countries. During a year that saw the implementation of new fundraising tactics, while also bidding farewell to the traditional fundraising method of canning, THON 2018 announced on Sunday that $10,151,663.93 was raised FOR THE KIDS. Since partnering with the Four Diamonds Fund in 1977, THON has donated more than $157 million to help kids and families conquering cancer.

Lions Pride considers it a great honor to be one of THON’s largest cash donors. Since 2009, the Penn State clothing retailer has donated nearly $250,000 to THON’s efforts. This year alone, the store contributed more than $28,500 as part of its annual 4 Weeks 4 THON campaign where the four weeks leading up to the event, the store donates 20% of its total in-store and online sales directly to THON. Store owner, Steve Moyer, discusses the promotion:

“It’s something that we take pride in participating in every year. We are very aware of the positive impact THON has on not only the Penn State community but also Four Diamonds families living in Central Pennsylvania. Knowing that Lions Pride plays such a big part in the fight against pediatric cancer is very humbling. I really hope that we continue to partner with THON for years to come.”

In addition to donating a percentage of the store’s in-store and online sales to THON, the store also designs and sells an annual 4 Weeks 4 THON shirt with all proceeds going to the cause. This year, Lions Pride also contributed the bags used for dancer mail call and provided items for the dancer welcome bags.

“As a local business, we understand the importance of giving back to the community,” said Moyer. “This is one small way we can make a big impact and hopefully bring some joy to individuals that are going through a really difficult time.”

The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Children’s Hospital is THON’s sole beneficiary. Since its creation in 1972, it has provided financial support, emotional support and so much more to families who have children conquering cancer. Additionally, the organization also provides research support and assistance to Penn State Children’s Hospital. Since its beginning, The Four Diamonds Fund has NEVER turned a family away.
