A week of intense competition has culminated in the No. 1 Nittany Lions securing a slot to the NCAA Women’s Volleyball semifinals this coming weekend. The women will face the formidable Nebraska Huskers.
Last Friday, the team hosted Mizzou at Rec Hall in front of a packed house. The ladies took down Missouri in three sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-19).
Fellow senior Haleigh Washington (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was also strong and logged nine kills.
Kendall White (Indianapolis, Ind.) logged seven kills for the match.
Penn State dominated across the board, besting Mizzou’s 26 digs with 39 as well as offering up 44 kills compared to 39. The Lions also stood out with 6.0 blocks to Missouri’s 2.0.
The very next night, the Lions refocused and knew they had a tough game ahead of them – the Michigan State Spartans.
With 3,500 fans in the stands at Rec Hall, the Lions secured their spot to the semifinals in three nail-biter sets (25-23, 25-17, 28-26).
Despite struggling in the first set, Penn State’s Washington rallied the team and put them back on top with two blocks in a row.
Washington logged five kills, two digs and seven blocks for the evening.
In the second set, Weiskircher and Heidi Thelen (Edgewood, Ky.) were the leaders, with Weiskircher putting down a game-total of 19 assists and Thelen recording nine kills and two digs.
Detering tallied 21 assists for the evening.
Lee and Frantti rounded things out in the third set with a strong performance; the pair secured 12 and eight kills, respectively.
White had one of her most impressive games to date and recorded 18 digs and three assists to ensure the Lions stayed in the lead.
The Blue and White are now set to take on the Nebraska Huskers this Thursday at 7 p.m. ET in Kansas City, Missouri at the Sprint Center. Fans can tune in to ESPN to follow along with all the action. Good luck, ladies!
