It looks like it is shaping up to be a magical season for Penn State Women’s Volleyball (25-1, 15-1), who retained their top-ranked spot after beating Iowa and Maryland this past week.
In the middle of the week, the women traveled to Iowa City to face the Hawkeyes. Despite the prowess of the fellow Big Ten team, the Lions took the win in just three sets (25-10, 25-17, 25-12).
Simone Lee (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) paved the way with 16 kills on a .429 clip. Lee also added a tremendous 15 digs on the night as well.
Defensive specialist Bryanna Weiskircher (Rockford, Ill.) came up big for the Lions with her consistent play, adding one kill, three digs and 17 assists against the Hawkeyes.
The women had just a few days to celebrate their win in Iowa City. The team knew they would be facing Maryland, a solid team, at home that weekend.
The Blue and White yet again rose to the challenge during Homecoming Weekend in Happy Valley. The game was played in front of the largest crowd yet this season at 6,305 attendees.
The women once again downed the team in three sets (25-14, 25-21, 25-16). In what turned out to be a big week for Lee, the senior led her team again to victory by adding 10 kills and 13 digs.
Frantti and Tori Gorrell (Oakville, Ontario) each added five kills against the Terps.
Weiskircher and Detering maintained the team’s pristine No.1-ranking thanks to 15 and 11 assists, respectively.
Senior Haleigh Washington (Colorado Springs, Colo.) helped out across the board during the Maryland game by contributing four kills, one dig and one block against.
The team will rev back up this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. to play Indiana University at home. Be sure to come out and cheer on your Lions at Rec Hall this week!
