Penn State Volleyball 3

As the school year comes to a close, so do many spring sports teams’ seasons. Let’s take a look at some of the final games of our Nittany Lions in the 2017 season.

  • 13 Penn State M. Volleyball (21-11, 11-3) closed out its regular season with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Hawai’i in Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday night. The five-set game was a nailbiter, as Penn State led 2-1 leading into the fourth set. Unfortunately, the steam ran out for the Blue and White as Hawai’i dominated the final sets, ousting Penn State from the NCAA Tournament. Luke Braswell (Manchester, Pa.) led the team with 43 assists and Calvin Mende (Redlands, Calif.) added 18 kills. Head Coach Mark Pavlik said he is “real excited” about much of the talent that will return to the team next year.

  • Women’s Volleyball is back in the news as the team announced it will compete in its fifth a foreign tournament ever this summer in Brazil from May 4-16. The team will travel to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, along with other famous landmarks in Brazil, all while facing some of Brazil’s best female volleyball teams. Good luck, ladies!

  • Men’s Golf wrapped up its Big Ten Tournament tied for fourth at the Big Ten Championships in Baltimore, Maryland. Sophomore Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) finished fourth in the tournament, finishing at 2-under for the tournament. Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) also came in sixth overall at the tournament.

  • Women’s Track and Field’s Danielle Gibson (Nassau, Bahamas) grabbed a title at the Penn Relays with a triple jump distance of 43’6”. Gibson won by more than four inches over her competitors and is the first female in Penn State program history to win a triple jump title at the Penn Relays.

  • Softball (22-29, 8-12) secured another Big Ten series win thanks to a massive comeback against Maryland in game three after being down 4-0 in the first three innings. The Nittany Lions used eight hits to score seven wins and eventually take the game as a 7-5 win. Kristina Brackpool (Valencia, Calif.) and Tori DuBois (Mt. Vernon, N.H.) added multiple RBI’s and Marlaina Laubach (Northampton, Pa.) pitched in relief for the win.

Good luck to all teams as they head toward the ends of their seasons!
