Wednesday before the tournament began, freshman 125-pounder, Nick Suriano, withdrew from the competition. He was one of the at-large bids for the tournament and was seeded third for his weight class.

Suriano suffered an ankle injury during Penn State’s final dual meet against Oklahoma State. He did not wrestle at Big Tens and was hoping to recover in time for NCAAs.

With eight wrestlers left in the running, all eight blew threw the first session on Thursday afternoon. The Lions totaled eight bonus points with four tech falls and one pin. After the first, Penn State took a narrow lead over Oklahoma State and Ohio State in the team scores.

Thursday evening, Penn State extended its lead but dropped one of its matches. Senior 133, Jimmy Gulibon, fell to Princeton’s No. 4 seed Matt Kolodzik. Gulibon’s 6-3 loss takes him to the consolation rounds Friday morning and he’s now working for third place.


The rest of the seven Nittany Lions move onto the quarterfinals Friday morning. The team tallied 7.5 bonus points off of a major, three technical falls and a pin.

Tomorrow morning, heavyweight Nick Nevills, 174 freshman Mark Hall and junior 197 Matt McCutcheon all have close matchups Friday morning in the quarters. All three Nittany Lions are seeded fifth and each of their opponents is seeded fourth.
